  • Fab:

The fragment of an antibody containing the antigen-binding site, generated by cleavage of the antibody with the protease papain. Papain cuts at the hinge region of the Y-shaped antibody molecule and produces two Fab fragments, corresponding to the two heads of the Y.

  • FDA:

The Food and Drug Administration is a consumer protection agency whose responsibility it is to promote and protect the public health by helping safe and effective products reach the market in a timely way, and monitoring products for continued safety after they are in use.

  • Flourescence-activated cell sorter (FACS):

An apparatus for analyzing and separating particles (usually cells) on the basis of their fluorescence and light scattering properties. FACS analysis of cellular populations typically uses antibodies that have been tagged with different fluorophores to mark the specific cell types.

  • Fluorescein:

A yellow dye used to label antibodies for fluorescence studies.

  • Fluorine:

A corrosive, toxic, colourless gas, which is chemically very active and always occurs combined. In the human body (especially teeth and bones), fluorine appears as a composition of compounds called fluorides.
